If his sermon is longer than usual, “He sends us to sleep.”
If it’s short, “He hasn’t bothered.”
If he raises his voice, “He’s shouting.”
If he speaks normally, “I can’t hear a thing.”
If he’s out visiting, “He’s never at home.”
If he’s at home, “He never visits.”
If he talks finance, “He’s too fond of money.”
If he doesn’t, “Nobody knows what he’s up to.”
If he encourages mission, “He wears everybody out.”
If he doesn’t, “The church is dead.”
If he takes time with people, “He goes on and on.”
If he is brief, “He never listens.”
If he decorates the church, “He’s spending too much money.”
If he doesn’t, “He’s letting everything go.”
If he is young, “He lacks experience.”
If he is old, “He ought to retire.”
And, if he dies?
Well, of course, nobody could ever take his place.

I think alot of those points are ok I mean the church was never meant to rely on one leader doing all the work. Historically for the first 300 years all christians were involved when they met together for the sacrements and fellowship in there homes. Are these not just the attitudes that the "church" has brought on itself by making a proffesional clergyman who does 90%of the work while others sit down and watch the show?. I'd like to know your thoughts.
Yeah I agree.
I think the church should have multiple elders/pastors.
When one man leads his character and personality tend to shape the church making the church unbalanced. In my opinion the more elders the better!
Cool good to hear that. Been readinh a ton of early church history lately its been interesting. Have you heard of a book called Pagan Christianity by Frank Viola and George Barna its caused quite a stir, mostly by those who havent read it! Its the best book Ive ever read, ever (Apart from the Bible lol). Really does shine a light on the history and tradition behind what happens in a church service today, you should have a read mate. Hope your well buddy ;)
Sounds like a good book. I haven't seen but I'll keep my eyes open for it.
God bless :-)
